Field Fence

Field Fence is a popular option for anyone with a larger lot. There are many options other than height but here are a few things you should know to help you narrow down which are best for you.

1. Round Post vs Square Post

Round post cost less than square post which is typically the case but in the past year it has become even more so. With lumber demand increasing and supply decreasing the rise of lumber prices has skyrocketed and unfortunately keeps creeping up.

2. Wire Mesh

Not all field fence requires wire mesh but if you are trying to contain small animals or even children then you may want to have this. They type of mesh varies as well. We prefer to use Red Brand mesh. The type of mesh and gauge will depend on your personal circumstances, a short comprehensive explanation on wire gauge can be found here. 

If you are concerned about trespassers "no climb" is a good option as it is composed of 2" x 4" rectangles which as the name implies deters climbing.

3. Rails

If you are not using any mesh then you will need rails. Three rails is the usual minimum but some people prefer four. Again, depending on your situation and what animals you may have the thickness of the rails vary. For horses and large cattle you will want 5/4" x 6" or 5/4" x 4",  if not, 1" x 6 " or 1" x 4" can get the job done.

4. Finishing Touches

If you are going with rails you may consider adding a trim piece over the posts. You may also want to have your fence painted which is a service we provide on new installs.
